This company exists because we lived the problem. We sat in cold clinic waiting rooms. We wrote checks that emptied our savings. We were told our only option was a $15,000 procedure with a 30% chance of working. And then we discovered that the same science, done at home, costs less than a nice dinner out.
MakeAMom started in 2021, in a small apartment in Reno, Nevada, with a question that should not have been so hard to answer: why does trying to have a baby cost more than a used car?
Our founder had spent two years and over $28,000 on fertility treatments. Two rounds of IUI at $3,200 each. One round of IVF at $18,000. Medications, monitoring, bloodwork, ultrasounds, parking fees at the hospital. The bills never stopped, and neither did the disappointment. After her IVF cycle failed, she sat in her car in the clinic parking lot and asked herself a question that changed everything: what am I actually paying for?
She started researching. She learned that intracervical insemination, the same method clinics use during IUI, has comparable success rates when performed at home. The medical literature was clear. The procedure itself takes five minutes. There is no medical reason it needs to happen in a clinical setting for most people. The clinics were charging thousands of dollars for a process that requires a syringe, proper timing, and a comfortable place to lie down.
The fertility industry is a $30 billion market built on one assumption: that you cannot do this without them. And for some people, that is true. IVF is a miracle for those who need it. But for the millions of women whose only barrier is access to sperm, timing, or gentle delivery, a five-figure medical bill is not just unnecessary, it is predatory.
We also saw something else. The products that did exist for at-home insemination were disposable pharmacy syringes never designed for internal use. They were uncomfortable, wasteful, and made the experience feel clinical instead of empowering. Women deserved better tools.
We spent fourteen months developing three specialized insemination kits, each solving a real, specific challenge that women face on their conception journey. We used medical-grade silicone, the same material used in reusable menstrual cups. We made every kit washable and reusable for unlimited attempts. We priced them so that a single kit costs less than the copay for one clinic visit.
The CryoBaby was designed for women using frozen donor sperm, where every fraction of a milliliter matters. The Impregnator was built for situations where sperm motility is a concern, with a soft cup that holds the sample at the cervix for hours. The BabyMaker was created for women with vaginismus or insertion anxiety, because pain should never stand between someone and motherhood.
We did not build one generic syringe and call it a day. We listened to what women actually needed, and we engineered solutions for each of those needs.
Since launching, MakeAMom kits have been used by thousands of women across the country. Single moms by choice. Lesbian couples building families. Heterosexual couples who spent their savings on treatments that did not work. Women in rural areas hours from the nearest fertility clinic. Women who simply wanted to try in the privacy and comfort of their own homes before committing to the clinical route.
Every positive pregnancy test photo that lands in our inbox reminds us why this work matters. Every message from a woman who says she had given up hope before finding us confirms that we are on the right path. Every review from someone who conceived on her second attempt with a $149 kit after spending thousands at a clinic fuels us to keep going.
We are not anti-clinic and we are not anti-doctor. We believe in medicine. We believe in IVF for those who need it. What we do not believe in is a system that makes women feel like they have no affordable options. Because they do. And those options should be accessible, reusable, comfortable, and designed with the same care that goes into any medical-grade device.
We will never stop improving our kits. We will never raise our prices to exploit demand. We will never pretend that what we offer is a guaranteed solution, because nothing in fertility is guaranteed. But we will always offer the most thoughtfully designed, most affordable, most empowering path to at-home insemination that exists.
If you are reading this, you are already braver than you think. You are already closer than you feel. And you do not have to do this alone, even if you are doing it by yourself.
Fertility care should not require a six-figure income. Our kits cost less than a single clinic copay and are reusable for unlimited attempts.
Every design decision is grounded in published reproductive science. ICI at home has the same success rate as ICI in a clinic, at a fraction of the cost.
We are building more than products. Our blog, our support team, and our contributors create a community where no one has to navigate this journey alone.
